Pilot hole

Pilot hole

Postby Babs1 » Sat Apr 11, 2009 3:29 pm

I've been having trouble screwing some screws into some wood. Someone has told me I need to to make some pilot holes first. What's the best tool for this. Thanks.

If you are screwing into hard wood then you'll probably need to drill a pilot hole with a power drill and drill bit. The drill bit needs to be a little smaller than the screw in diameter.

So it will depend on what size srews you've got. As an example for number 8 screws I would use a 3mm drill bit.

Alternatively, for softer would and if you are screwing small thin screws you can use a bradawl. This is a simple hand tool with a spike on the end. You simply push it into the wood and twist.

How to Make A Pilot Hole

• Find a nail smaller than the size of the screw you will be using.
• Mark the spot where the screw will be inserted.
• Hammer the nail straight into the marked spot.
• Remove the nail.
• Insert the screw.

A pilot hole is especially useful when working with hardwoods such as maple or oak. If you are planning on using brass screws (which tend to break easily) you might consider putting a steel screw of the same diameter into the pilot hole to make the threads, then take it out and replace it with the brass screw.
